Reminder of K-12 Telecommunication Device-Free Learning Environment

Posted Date: 8/30/25 (5:00 PM)

As we ready for the new year, we want to address the subject of student telecommunication devices in our schools.

Our district-wide policy about student use of telecommunication devices is Board Policy 3245, which can be read at THIS LINK and our district-wide procedure can be read at THIS LINK. The policy was passed by our School Board in 2022 and applies to all students in grades K-12. In general, this policy states that our classrooms will be free of all telecommunication devices. This includes:
    • Cell phones
      • Ear buds
      • Smart watches
      • Personal tablets or computers
      • any other device that can send and receive text messages, connect to the internet and take photos
Our buildings can set procedures that are more restrictive than the district policy. Please see your school's student handbook for more information.

Over the summer, our School Board convened a committee to review our current cell phone policy and hear about experiences our students, staff and families have had with this policy. The district intends to continue this conversation during the 2025-2026 school year, offering more opportunities for conversation and education about this subject. Our goal is to continue to fine-tune our policies and procedures to create the best learning environment possible.

You can read more about our policy and process at THIS LINK. Stay tuned for more information as this process unfolds.
